Frequently asked questions
Q: Claritin vs Reactine — which is better?
Both are non-drowsy second-generation antihistamines. Claritin (loratadine) is generally the most non-drowsy of the three; Reactine (cetirizine) is slightly more potent but has a small drowsiness risk for some people; Aerius (desloratadine) is in between. We can help you pick based on your sensitivities.
Q: Should I start Claritin before allergy season?
Yes — antihistamines work much better as a preventative wall than as a fix after symptoms set in. Start a daily dose at the first hint of pollen (usually mid-March in Waterloo) and continue through the season.
Q: Can I take Claritin every day long-term?
Daily long-term use is generally safe for most adults, even year-round. If you find it's losing effectiveness, you can switch antihistamine class (try Reactine or Aerius) and they often work again.
Q: Is Claritin safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Loratadine is generally considered the first-choice antihistamine in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but always check with your OB/midwife or pharmacist before starting any medication during pregnancy.
From The Boardwalk Pharmacy team
If your allergies aren't responding to oral antihistamines, you might benefit from adding a nasal corticosteroid spray (fluticasone, mometasone). Drop by — we can put together a layered allergy plan that works for spring in Waterloo.
