Strep Throat Treatment in Waterloo — Get a Prescription Today
Pharmacist-Prescribed Treatment for Strep Throat in Waterloo
Since 2023, Ontario pharmacists have been authorized under the Minor Ailments program to independently assess and prescribe treatment for Group A Streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis — commonly known as strep throat.
At The Boardwalk Pharmacy in Waterloo, our pharmacists can perform a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) for strep throat on the spot. If your test is positive, we can prescribe and dispense the appropriate antibiotic in the same visit — all covered by OHIP. No family doctor appointment needed, no walk-in clinic wait.
We are located at 75 University Ave W, Waterloo, ON N2L 3C5. Walk-ins welcome.
What Is Strep Throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep). Unlike a viral sore throat, strep requires antibiotic treatment to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever.
Common symptoms include:
- Sudden, severe sore throat
- Fever (38°C / 100.4°F or higher)
- Difficulty swallowing
- Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck
- Swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus
- Headache and body aches
- Absence of cough (cough is more typical of viral illness)
If you or your child are experiencing these symptoms, come in and we can test you right away.

What the Pharmacist Will Assess

If a pharmacist determines the condition is outside the scope of the Minor Ailments program (e.g., severely immunocompromised patient, peritonsillar abscess), they will refer you promptly to the appropriate provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is strep throat testing and treatment covered by OHIP?
Yes. Under Ontario’s Minor Ailments program, the pharmacist assessment and Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) for strep throat are covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents. You do not need a health card referral — simply present your Ontario health card. The antibiotic prescription is dispensed through your regular drug benefits (ODB, private insurance, or cash).
How long does the whole process take?
The Rapid Antigen Test takes only 5–10 minutes to produce a result. Including the pharmacist assessment, most patients are assessed, tested, prescribed, and dispensed within 20–30 minutes — far faster than most walk-in clinic waits.
What antibiotic will I receive?
Our pharmacist will only prescribe an antibiotic if your RAT result is positive for Group A Strep. The most commonly prescribed antibiotic for strep throat is amoxicillin or, for patients with a penicillin allergy, an appropriate alternative. The pharmacist will review your allergy history and current medications to choose the safest option for you.
Can children be tested and treated at the pharmacy?
Yes. The Ontario Minor Ailments program covers strep throat assessment and treatment for pediatric patients. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our pharmacist will perform an age-appropriate assessment and ensure the antibiotic dose is appropriate for the child’s weight and age. If the presentation raises any concerns beyond a straightforward strep infection, we will refer to a physician.
Do I need an appointment?
No appointment is required. Walk-ins are welcome at The Boardwalk Pharmacy. If you prefer to call ahead so we can prepare, you can reach us at (519) 578-3000. Our team will let you know the best time to come in to minimize your wait.
