PICO-SALAX Sachets (Orange Flavour, 2 sachets) is a low-volume bowel cleanser used to prepare the colon for a colonoscopy or surgical procedure. The Boardwalk Pharmacy keeps it stocked in Waterloo with free local delivery and same-day pickup.
Unlike Peglyte (which requires drinking 4 L of liquid), PICO-SALAX uses just 2 small sachets dissolved in water — a much smaller volume that many patients find easier to tolerate. It works through magnesium citrate and sodium picosulfate to clear the colon.
Key benefits
- Low-volume prep — just 150 mL per sachet (vs 4 L for Peglyte)
- Orange flavour, well-tolerated
- 2 sachets per box — typically one full prep for one procedure
- Available without a prescription in Ontario
Frequently asked questions
Q: PICO-SALAX vs Peglyte — which is better?
Both work well; the choice often comes down to volume tolerance. PICO-SALAX requires much less liquid but is more expensive; Peglyte is gentler on electrolytes but means drinking a large volume. Your gastroenterologist's protocol usually decides.
Q: When do I take PICO-SALAX?
Most clinics give a split dose: one sachet the afternoon before your procedure, the second sachet 6 hours before. Always follow your specialist's exact timing.
Q: Will I be glued to the bathroom?
Plan to be at home with easy bathroom access for 4–6 hours after each sachet. Drink plenty of clear fluids alongside (water, apple juice, clear broth, ginger ale — nothing red, purple, or with pulp).
Q: Is PICO-SALAX safe with kidney disease or heart failure?
People with significant kidney disease, heart failure, or electrolyte imbalances should not use PICO-SALAX without specialist supervision — it can shift electrolytes (especially magnesium and phosphate) significantly. We can check your medication list and conditions before you take it.
From The Boardwalk Pharmacy team
If you've never done a colonoscopy prep before, the day is uncomfortable but uneventful for most people. Stay near a bathroom, keep clear fluids going, and use a barrier cream (zinc oxide) on the area in advance — you'll thank yourself later.
