Vaginal yeast infections are common, uncomfortable, and nothing to be embarrassed about. If you're experiencing the telltale itch, burning, or discharge, you can get assessed and treated quickly at Boardwalk Pharmacy in Waterloo — no doctor's appointment needed, free with your OHIP card.
What Is a Vaginal Yeast Infection?
A vaginal yeast infection (vaginal candidiasis) is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus that naturally lives in the vagina in small amounts. When the balance of normal bacteria is disrupted, Candida can multiply and cause an infection. Common symptoms include:
- Intense vaginal itching or irritation
- Burning sensation, especially during urination or intercourse
- Thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge
- Redness and swelling of the vulva
- Vaginal soreness
Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted and are not a sign of poor hygiene. They are incredibly common — most women will experience at least one in their lifetime. Many factors can trigger one, including antibiotic use, hormonal changes, pregnancy, or diabetes.
How Your Pharmacist Can Help
Under Ontario's Minor Ailments Program, Boardwalk Pharmacy pharmacists are authorized to assess your symptoms and prescribe effective antifungal treatment — including oral fluconazole (a single-dose pill) or topical antifungal creams — without a doctor's visit.
Your pharmacist will:
- Discuss your symptoms and relevant history in a private, confidential setting
- Determine whether your symptoms are consistent with an uncomplicated yeast infection
- Prescribe or recommend the most appropriate antifungal treatment
- Counsel you on how to use the treatment correctly and what to expect
- Advise on strategies to reduce the likelihood of recurrence
- Refer you to a physician if your case is complicated or if symptoms recur frequently
Private, Comfortable, and Free
We understand these conversations require privacy and sensitivity. Our pharmacists offer confidential consultations — just ask to speak with the pharmacist privately and we'll accommodate you. The assessment is fully covered by OHIP for Ontario residents with a valid health card.
The Minor Ailments Program covers uncomplicated yeast infections in non-pregnant adult women. If you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or experience frequent recurrent infections, your pharmacist will guide you to appropriate physician care.
