Heartburn & GERD Treatment at the Pharmacy in Waterloo
That burning sensation rising in your chest after a meal — heartburn — is one of the most common complaints pharmacists hear. Whether you're dealing with occasional acid reflux or more persistent GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), Boardwalk Pharmacy in Waterloo can help. Under Ontario's Minor Ailments Program, our pharmacists are licensed to assess and treat heartburn and GERD — free with your OHIP card, no appointment needed.
What Is Heartburn and GERD?
Heartburn is a burning discomfort that starts in the stomach and rises toward the throat. It happens when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus (acid reflux). When this occurs regularly — twice a week or more — it may be diagnosed as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
Common symptoms include:
- Burning sensation in the chest or throat, especially after eating or at night
- Sour or acidic taste in the mouth
- Regurgitation of food or liquid into the throat
- Difficulty swallowing or sensation of food stuck in the throat
- Chronic cough or hoarseness (in some cases)
Triggers include spicy or fatty foods, caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, eating large meals, smoking, excess weight, and lying down shortly after eating.
How Your Pharmacist Can Help
Under Ontario's Minor Ailments Program, Boardwalk Pharmacy pharmacists are authorized to assess your symptoms and prescribe or recommend the appropriate therapy — which may include proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole, H2 blockers, or antacids depending on your situation.
Your pharmacist will:
- Discuss your symptoms, frequency, and triggers
- Review your current medications for any drug interactions
- Recommend or prescribe appropriate acid suppression therapy
- Counsel you on dietary and lifestyle changes that reduce symptoms
- Monitor your progress and adjust the plan if needed
- Refer you to a physician if your symptoms suggest a more serious condition (e.g., difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss, or blood in stool)
When Is Heartburn an Emergency?
Most heartburn is benign, but some symptoms require urgent care. Seek immediate help if you experience chest pain that could be cardiac in nature, severe difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, or black/tarry stools. Your pharmacist will help you differentiate and direct you appropriately.
