What Is Heartburn and GERD?

Heartburn is a burning discomfort that starts in the stomach and rises toward the throat. It happens when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus (acid reflux). When this occurs regularly — twice a week or more — it may be diagnosed as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Common symptoms include:

• Burning sensation in the chest or throat, especially after eating or at night
• Sour or acidic taste in the mouth
• Regurgitation of food or liquid into the throat
• Difficulty swallowing or sensation of food stuck in the throat
• Chronic cough or hoarseness (in some cases)

Triggers include spicy or fatty foods, caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, eating large meals, smoking, excess weight, and lying down shortly after eating.
