ASPIRIN Coated Daily Low Dose 81 mg — enteric-coated acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) tablets used for cardiovascular protection in adults at increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Stocked at The Boardwalk Pharmacy in Waterloo with free local delivery.
Low-dose ASA, often called "baby aspirin," works by reducing platelet stickiness and helping prevent blood clots in arteries. It's the most-prescribed cardiovascular protection medication in Canada — but it should only be taken on a doctor's recommendation because it does increase bleeding risk.
Key details
- 81 mg acetylsalicylic acid per tablet — the standard cardiovascular-prevention dose
- Enteric-coated to dissolve in the small intestine, reducing stomach irritation
- Daily use under medical supervision
- Available without a prescription in Ontario
Frequently asked questions
Q: Should I be taking low-dose aspirin?
Daily low-dose ASA is recommended for adults who have already had a heart attack, stroke, or have certain cardiovascular conditions (secondary prevention). For people without a history of heart disease, the benefit is less clear and the bleeding risk is real — talk to your family doctor before starting.
Q: When should I take it?
Most cardiologists recommend evening dosing, but consistency matters more than timing. The enteric coating helps prevent stomach upset; never crush or chew the tablet — that defeats the coating.
Q: Can I stop taking it if I'm having surgery?
Don't stop without checking first — for some heart conditions, suddenly stopping ASA can cause a clotting rebound. Your surgeon and cardiologist will coordinate this if needed.
Q: Is there a difference between ASA 81 mg and a regular ASA 325 mg tablet?
Yes — 81 mg is the standard cardiovascular dose. 325 mg (regular Aspirin) is used for pain or fever, but is too much for daily heart protection because of the higher GI bleeding risk.
From The Boardwalk Pharmacy team
If you've been taking 81 mg ASA daily for a long time and you're not sure why — bring your bottle in or give us a call. Sometimes patients are kept on aspirin from an old prescription that's no longer needed, and sometimes they should definitely keep going. We can check the latest cardiology guidelines against your situation.
